SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENT SERVICES (SEEDS)

African SEEDS is a socio-economic, ecotourism, community development and environmental education consultancy.  Founder, Dr Sue Snyman, has over 20 years experience in ecotourism and community development and has in the past five years gained extensive experience in environmental education for rural children living in and around protected areas.  With experience in the below sectors, Sue is well placed to advise, facilitate and consult on projects involving the private sector, local communities, NGOs, governments and academia.

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, but with extensive practical and academic experience in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe and through her role as vice-Chair of the IUCN WCPA Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group, also across the globe, Sue is able to advise and consult over a number of sectors, regions and areas.

With a wide network of colleagues and partners across the globe, African SEEDS has the ability to develop comprehensive proposals involving other consultants and partners as required, to ensure maximum benefit and effectiveness.

African SEEDS sector experience includes:

Private sector ecotourism development and engagement with communities: over 18 years, including over 8 years with Wilderness Safaris, 2 years with &Beyond, Manager of the Franschhoek Wine Valley and Tourist Association and numerous other private sector lodges and restaurants

Non-profit organisations: over 6 years with Children in the Wilderness – an environmental education and life skills programme for rural children in six southern African countries – including regional coordination, resource development, marketing, fund-raising, training, administration, budgeting, and as a board member

Academic: affiliation with the School of Economics, University of Cape Town for over 20 years, as a Research Fellow of the Environmental Policy Research Unit (EPRU).  Completed PhD courses in environmental and resource economics from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and have published in numerous international journals.  Currently a Research Associate at School of Tourism & Hospitality, College of Business and Economics, University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Volunteer organisations: Involvement with the IUCN WCPA Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist (TAPAS) Group for the past 4 years, as an Executive Committee member as well as the Global Coordinator of the Community & Heritage Working Group within the TAPAS Group; affiliated to numerous other volunteer tourism, conservation and socio-economic development organisations.
